Lolita's Personality

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who enjoy playing, climbing and interact. They need to spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as well as local restaurants and bars. They are not just an excellent pet, but is also a great pet for children.
Despite their adorable nature however, these birds can be loud and can cause a disturbance for those living close by. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in condos and apartments or near children who may be frightened by their roar.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining the sex. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care
For a long time, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her were hopeful that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, vowed to come up with an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to eventually open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the remainder of her life and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. Lolita's Diet
